Inside Scoop

Question: What is your favourite activity/memory to do with your students? Answer: So, I’ve been responsible for- they are high functioning ASD students. They are students with Autism, but they are high functioning. I created an after school social club for them and they have brought so much- [such] a sense of fulfillment as a teacher. These students, and this group. So, they are a big thing. I’m gonna leave here and know that I was able to reach these kids and help them make connections because students who are on the spectrum, they’re so bright, but they struggle to form relationships and friendships. Through this social club I’ve helped them to do that, so that’s definitely one special memory for me. To read the full Inside Scoop with the Ms. Scarlato, click 'Read more'.

Question: What advice would you give to younger students? Julia: Chill, take a breath. For the grade nines and tens, establish a work ethic and find out what works for you. Also, remember if something goes wrong or not to plan, like getting a bad grade, you will be fine. It’s not the end of the world, you can retrace your steps and figure out what went wrong. Not everything is going to go perfectly like expected. For me, one thing I regret was wanting everything to have to happen orderly, because it's not how life works. Just take a step back, take a breath, you’re going to be okay. Also, I would say just talk to people. I regret how worried I was about how people perceive me when no one’s looking at you; no one cares. Join whatever you want to join, teams and clubs, because if you don’t do it in the early high school years, you will never build up the confidence and get used to going out and putting yourself out there. I feel like that’s what makes your high school experience, putting yourself out there, joining things and meeting new people.
