A Message from S.A.F.E and E.S.P
Every June, millions of people around the world come together to celebrate pride month, including Holy Cross! In 1969, a famous event started the movement: The Stonewall Riots. On the morning of June 28, 1969, New York City police stormed the Stonewall Inn. Fed up with years of police harassment, customers and neighbourhood residents began throwing objects at police as they loaded the arrested queer folk into police vans. The scene eventually exploded into a full-blown riot, with protests that lasted for five more days. A year later, the first pride was underway to celebrate the commencement of the riots. This is why every June we celebrate pride; it reminds us to fight for the basic rights of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals with the same integrity as those valiant people in the riots.
Today, the movement has made great strides toward equity, however, many issues must still be combatted. 2SLGBTQ+ youth today still face bullying, ostracization and microaggressions. This is why the 2SLGBTQ+ community and its allies continue to educate, destigmatize, and promote equity.
At S.A.F.E. and E.S.P., we ensure that the voices of 2SLGBTQ+ youth are heard! We promote inclusivity in our school with fun initiatives that bring Holy Cross together. This year we are going all out for pride month! Listen out for our announcements, check our display case next to the chapel, and follow our Instagram page @hcca_safe_esp.

Question: Any advice you would give to people who are interested in practicing the Catholic faith? Answer: It’s almost the most basic rule for almost anything in life, but especially prayed, especially church. Just show up. 99 percent of prayer, of our relationship with God, of church is just showing up. You just show up. Even if you don’t feel like you’re praying or if you think God isn’t there, or if you’re at mass and you think the Priest is just doing all these funny things.
